Seashore Engineering was engaged in 2023 by the Shire of Denmark to undertake the design, procurement and construction supervision for a seawall at Ocean Beach. Ocean beach is a popular swimming and surfing beach adjacent to the mouth of the Wilson Inlet. The site provides beach access and coastal infrastructure to the public, but is exposed to tides, large waves during storms and scour from Wilson Inlet entrance openings.
The scope of works involved the demolishment and replacement of the existing timber retaining wall at the Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) and the construction of a new seawall. Dune nourishment and stabilisation was also undertaken to the north and south of the foreshore retaining wall.
A new seawall was constructed with CHS steel pipes, FRP sheet piles, timber panelling and rock scour protection. The project increased the design life and visual amenity of the structure to protect the public realm behind it, limit the potential of erosion at the toe of the steep dune the SLSC sits on, and optimise beach width at higher tides.
The completed project was commemorated with a WA Earth Award in 2024 for ‘Project Value up to $2 Million’.
