The City of Busselton received funding in 2023 under the Australian Governments Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program (CERMP) to undertake the West Busselton Coastal Stabilisation works.
The West Busselton Coastline from Gale St, 600m west of the Busselton Jetty, to King St, 1400m west of the Busselton Jetty has been subject to storm erosion in recent years. Beach erosion has been managed with sand nourishment and beach scraping in the past. Due to large exposure of the site, accelerated erosion and long-term sediment deficiency, coastal adaption works were undertaken in 2025 and 2026.
Stage 1 of stabilisation works was implemented in 2025:
- Construction of 5 low profile Geotextile Sand Container Groynes, typically of 40m length
- beach nourishment with imported sand (7,500m3)
- refurbishment of the King St GSC revetment (~60m length).
Stage 2 of stabilisation works was completed in 2026 and included: Construction of 2 low profile GSC Groynes, typically of 40m length, and beach nourishment with imported sand (3,000m3).
